Trained as healers, doctors have traditionally avoided dealing with such problems as emotional distress, mental illness and drug or alcohol abuse in their colleagues and themselves. Physicians offer their patients the benefit of training, skill and compassion - services they often fail to receive for themselves.

The Physician Health Program of the OMA is a program designed by physicians for physicians, (including residents and medical students) and their families.

As part of our comprehensive service,  we provide:

  • prompt advice and support to doctors who feel troubled or at risk, their families, and concerned colleagues;
  • preliminary assessment;
  • intervention co-ordination;
  • referral for counseling and clinical services; and
  • monitoring, case management and advocacy for substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders and workplace behavioural problems.

We respect a physician's privacy and maintain confidentiality to the greatest possible degree. Names of referral sources are also held in confidence when requested.

Physicians have the same needs as their patients. Doctors and their families need not suffer.  Help is available.
